Fluent Volunteers for Multiple Sclerosis Service Day

Posted in News by fluentls on October 22, 2009

“It is in giving that we receive” Christine Giraldo (Staff Interpreter)

On October 17, 2009 Fluent partnered with Element 7, joined over a hundred other volunteers for the annual MS Service Day to honor those suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.  With a group of seventeen, Fluent and Element 7 met at a local church for a brief orientation given by the Mid-Atlantic Multiple Sclerosis Society Chapter and to gather supplies before heading to project sites.  In total, there were 21 homes of those suffering from MS in the Charlotte, NC area, where we would undertake tasks such as household cleaning, yard work, painting, organization, and visiting with the homeowner.element7-group shot

We had a wonderful time bonding as co-workers while giving back to those in need.  As Christine, a Fluent employee stated, “I felt a great satisfaction at the end of the day that overshadowed how tired and achy I felt.  I also walked away with a sadness having realized that even family members of those we served, have turned their back on the sick, out of selfish reasons.  Let us always remember how blessed we are, each and every day.”  We at Fluent recognize the necessity of able bodies to perform tasks such as these for people in our community who are in need.  A day committed to total selflessness results in a sense of satisfaction and encouragement, knowing that in a world of chaos and stress we were able to make a difference in someone’s life. At Fluent, we are making a difference!

MS is a disease that affects 400,000 Americans and 2.5 million people world-wide.  The tasks the volunteers performed may not have been completed had it not been for this service day.  The volunteers put forth a great deal of effort and love into each assignment making our FIRST volunteer day one to remember!  Thank you to our volunteers, to Element 7 and to the MS Society!

The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) is the national organization that certifies ASL interpreters. To become certified one must pass a written test that covers things like history, ethics, and culture. Once the interpreter has passed the written test, they have 5 years to complete the performance test. The test consists of a videotaped interview portion where the interpreter must look at various scenarios and discuss how they would handle them taking into consideration the needs of the consumer, the ethical dilemmas, and the professionalism of the field. Then they must interpret a variety of situations to diverse language styles and submit their tape of this work to several judges who evaluate the work and determine if they have the skills and professionalism to become a certified interpreter. The certification system has 3 levels. NIC (National Interpreter Certification), NIC Advanced, and NIC Master levels.
